Tens of billions of dollars that actually belong to ordinary people like you are being held by the government – quite legally. Some of it may be yours or may have belonged to a relative of yours who has passed away.

Do you find it hard to imagine that so much money could be going unclaimed? Actually the “unclaimed property”, as the government calls it, comes from a variety of sources and a few examples will make it easier to understand:

Sometimes U.S. Savings Bonds – which take 30-40 years to mature – get tucked away and forgotten, lost, or thrown away by mistake. A check may have been mailed to you at a previous address and never forwarded.

Perhaps a relative lost an insurance policy that named you as a beneficiary and you have no idea if it exists or where to find it. Maybe there’s a life insurance policy out there that you don’t even know exists, but you’re one of the beneficiaries. Or you may never have collected on an insured account you held in a bank that failed. Here’s how to look for your property:

Find Unclaimed Money

If the government owes you money and you do not collect it, then it’s unclaimed. This also applies to banks, credit unions, pensions, and other sources like:

States’ Unclaimed Money

  • Your state’s listing of unclaimed funds and property.

Unclaimed Back Wages

  • If you think you may be owed back wages from your employer.

Life Insurance

  • For unclaimed insurance funds that are owed to certain current or former policyholders or their beneficiaries.

  • For unclaimed pension money from companies that went out of business or ended a defined plan.

  • IRS may owe you money if your refund was unclaimed or undelivered.

Banking, Investments, and Currency

  • For unclaimed funds from failed financial institutions.
  • Unclaimed deposits from credit unions.
  • The Securities and Exchange Commission lists enforcement cases where a company or person owes investors money.

  • If you had an FHA-insured mortgage, you may be eligible for a refund from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Savings Bonds

  • Treasury Hunt allows you to search for bonds issued since 1974 that have matured and are no longer earning interest.

  • Money owed to you from foreign governments after loss of property.
