As it relates to affirmation, to “affirm”something, by dictionary definition, means that you are declaring it to be true.
But if I affirm that I am physically fit when I’m not, wealthy when I’m in financial despair, or loved when I am all alone, how exactly does that work in the guise of living authentically.
Well, who in the heck am I fooling?
Here is how it works
An affirmation is a sentence or phrase that you repeat periodically to make a formal declaration to yourself and the universe of your intention for it to be the truth.
The brain has a thing called a Reticular Activation System (RAS).
It acts as a filter that lets in information that we need and filters out information that we don’t need.
We would be bombarded with information that totally overwhelm us if this system dud nit exist.
Instead, our brain registers what matters to us based on our stated of impressed goals, needs, interests, and desires.
Your best friend rides with you down a busy street. You are hungry and your best friend is horney ( two strong emotion driven thoughts).
You would see all the restaurants and none of the attractive men or women while your best friend would be gawking at all the relationship possibilities and none of the restaurants.
Another great example is when you buy a new model car, different model than you normally drive. Then you notice once you begin driving it, you see models like it on a regular bases.
Yet, prior to this, you barely noticed the model.
From my personal experience, I recently began driving a Range Rover. I would swear to you that prior to having it, they were unique vehicles that very few people drove.
But now that I drive it daily, I see Range Rovers all over the place all day long.
The reticular activating system recognized what is important to me or what is accepted as part of my awareness and allowed the information in.

When you say an affirmation over and over again, a couple of things happen.
One, is the affirmation sends a clear message to your RAS that this is important to you. When you do that, the mind gets busy noticing ways to help you achieve that goal.
If physically fit is your emphasis, you’ll suddenly begin noticing gyms and nutritional meal spots.
If wealth is related to your affirmation, investments and income opportunities will show up in your journey daily.
In essence, the affirmation can kick your creativity into high gear.
Here another very important way an affirmation work.
A affirmation creates a dynamic tension in our beings. If what you say is at a higher vibration than what you perceive the truth to be, the dynamic tension will be uncomfortable.
For instance, If you say ”I am enjoying my life at my healthy ideal weight” but in fact you believe you are 20lbs oveerweight.
Since this is uncomfortable, you’ll want to rid yourself of the tension.
There are only twos ways to do that:
One is to stop saying the affirmation ( which so many people do), the other is to raise the bar on reality by making the affirmation and reality match.
So how do you make an affirmation effective?
First, decide what kind of transformation you want bring about in your life – a goal or intention. Decide on the quality of life, the attitude of expression, the value of life desire, or the characteristics you want to develop in yourself.
If it fits, add an emotion to the statement.
“ I am joyfully living at my ideal weight of 125lbs.
Or, “I am happily living my wealthy lifestyle.”
Make it positive, not negative. “ I am in great physical shape” rather than “I am not overweight”
It is said that it takes 21 days of repetition for am affirmation to stick and then there are many others that say that repeating the affirmation for a month works better.
I personally have repeated the same affirmation for over 10 years and I introduced affirmations to my youngest 3 children at ages 6, 8, and 10. They are now 15, 17, and 19 still going strong.
In the beginning you will have to consciously remind yourself to repeat your affirmation.
This is because you are currently used to existing in your present state, so that is where your mind sits and accepts.
If you repeat your affirmation at every opportunity they will begin to replace the negative or current mind banner that takes over when you are not monitoring your thoughts.
Work diligently to make the dynamic tension go away by making your words and reality match.
